Q

What are the physiological effects of the treatment/how does it achieve the aim?

A

increase membrane distortion/permeability

improve transfer of nutrients and metabolites

facilitate the inflammatory and proliferation phases of healing

continuous-decreased pain perception, increased tissue extensibility.

Q

What principles are used in carrying out the technique?

A

uses sound waves to produce physiological effects, the sounds waves move forward, the actual particles vibrate back and forth.

the wave pattern is irregular, so to cancel the irregularities out the treatment head needs to move continuously.-can also lead to damaged tissue if not.

when the u/s beam has left the transducer the intensity is reduced due to it being absorbed in the tissues and scattered.

Q

Precautions and contraindications?

A

precautions-decreased sensation, inflammation

contraindications-tumours, circulatory issues, pacemakers, local infections, active TB

Q

How do you know how long to do ultrasound?

A

if the treatment head fits onto the area 3 times, set to 3 minutes (but need to take into consideration whether its pulsed or continuous)

Q

Application?

A

test machine using bowl of water

position patient comfortably and expose the area to be treated

check for any contraindications

apply small amount of gel on the area to be treated

put the u/s head against the area to be treated and turn on the machine

keep ultrasound head moving when the machine is turned on, use small slow circles to cover the structure/area.

set mode of treatment

establish how many treatment heads will fit in the area

set the time ( if pulsed 1:4 (20%) you need to do 5x1min per treatment)

set intensity

remove gel and check for any adverse effects.

Q

What do you need to remember to ask the patient to do afterwards?

A

ask them to remember how it feels in the next 24-48 hours.

feel nothing=not enough

slight uncomfortableness= just right

agony=too much
