Ultrasound Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is ultrasound
Sound with frequencies over 20kHz
How are ultrasound created
Devices emit electrical oscillations with a range of frequencies that are converted to mechanical vibrations to produce sound waves beyond the human auditary range
Uses of ultrasound
Pregnancy scans (sound waves travel through the body but whenever they meet the boundary of two mediums , like fluid in the womb, the wave is reflected back)
Industrial imaging (Find flaws in objects like pipes or materials like wood)
Earthquakes
When there is an earthquake it produces seismic waves which travel through the earth and are recorded using a seismometer
P-Waves
Longitudinal waves that travel through solids and liquids
Travel faster than S-Waves
S-Waves
Transverse waves that can’t travel through liquids or gases
Slower than P-waves
