Definition of Civility
Public Politeness/Righteousness
Aristotle’s statement
Civility is necessary for people to realize their human potential
Civility is more than external and must be based on more than _____ and _______
Familiarity and intimacy
Hebrews 12 tells us that….
We should pursue peace and to be holy
Civility is not….. (4 things)
Relativism, it doesn’t depend on the person
Liking everyone but we do need to see everyone has value and potential
Nationalism-not unwavering national pride
Evangelistic Strategy- don’t be civil just to convert people
What mindset should you have towards others whether or not you agree with them?
Empathy, teachability and curiosity
Empathy
Projecting yourself into another’s shoes to know what life is like for them; in-feeling
Curiosity
To gain a wide view or generous perspective on what it means to be human
Teachabilty
A willingness to learn about and from others
3 wrong ways to do speech
Angry speech- words delivered in spite or hate
Unhelpful speech- lies or unthinking stereotypes
Crusading speech- winning at all costs
Rules for dealing with people you don’t agree with:
Remember you are a sinner too and the other’s humanity
Luke 6:43-45 reveals that speech is…
the overflow of your heart; what you say reveals the condition of your heart
Pluralism
manyisms; diversity
Good vs bad pluralism
Good: Cultures, personalities, foods
Bad: diseases, violence, evils, religions, sins, idols
Two main examples of pluralism:
Worldviews- How we see reality (Either biblical or no)
Cultural- how we see the world based on class, geography, ethnicity, gender, etc.
Five principles for civility and sexuality
Be sexually self-critical Avoid oversimplifications Remember that Christians haven't treated others well in the past Watch irrational fears Practice sexual empathy
Traditional teaching of hell
People who reject God and have not put their trust in Christ are separated from God forever and face eternal punishment
Universalism
The belief that everyone will go to Heaven or have chances after death
The teaching of Hell shows us….. (3 things)
The seriousness of sin
The importance of human freedom
The final settling of accounts is in God’s hands
Why is it civil/uncivil to talk about Hell
It is not uncivil but it would be cruel and harsh if hell is true and we do nothing to warn people about the severity of rebellion
Exposure to other religions and worldviews can lead to several approaches:
Evangelism- trying to convert others
Dialogue- Conversing with others in order to learn about them but not necessarily converting them
Combining both- Presenting are view with gentleness and respect
“All truth is God’s truth” means….
The Bible tells us the truth, but non-Christians may also say truthful things and the Bible helps us to test whether those things are true or false
A Biblical example of someone who was faithful to God in a culture that did not honor God was….
Daniel
Abraham Kuyper
A Norwegian pastor and eventual Prime Minister who started a Christian political party. His favorite quote was about Jesus taking ownership over every square inch of the Earth; Jesus is Lord over everything. This can give off triumphalism (We’re taking over everything and you can’t stop us)
