Self-determination
The power to control one’s own affairs.
National self-determination is the power of people within a nation- state or nation to make their own decisions about what is in their interest.
Patriotism
The love for ones country and being able to admit that its not perfect.
Ultranationalism
An extreme form of nationalism.
Often racist and hostile towards other nations
Sovereignty
The political authority to control ones own affairs.
Country
Another word for nation-state.
Internationalism
The doctrine that all members of the global community accept collective responsibility for the challenges that face the world and that the motives of nations and nation-states must be respected in search for solutions.
Nation
A group of people who share common cultural characteristics.
State
A political entity. Refers to a level of government that is sovereign.
Nation-state
When the term nation and state coincide. So when a group of people with shared heritage and sovereign government overlap.
Linguistic Understanding.
“Mother Tongue” learn from your Mother.
Sharing a language with others creates a feeling of belonging and can be very powerful.
Ethnic Understanding.
Many nations come into being because people share the same ethnic, racial, cultural or linguistic characteristics.
Cultural Understanding
The ways of life that a group o of people share. Can also inspire a sense of nation.
Religious Understanding
One mutual belief.
Ex. The Jewish nation has existed for about 3000 years.
Geographic Understandings
Mountains, oceans and deserts are physical barriers that often forced people to develop in isolation from other people.
Relationship to Land
Different geographic areas, for example provide different resources, which influence the way people live.
Spiritual Understandings
Spiritual connections that unite them.
Ex. Spiritual ties connect Jews, Christians and Muslims to the city of Jerusalem. For these religions Jerusalem is a holy city.
Political Understandins
The desire for self- determination.
Civic Nation
A nation created by people - no matter what their ethnicity, culture and language - who agree to lie according to particular values and beliefs.
Ethnic Nation
Nationalism that is founded on shared ethnicity, culture and language. People who share these traits may choose to create a nation-state based on their collective identity.
Constitution
The fundamental law that governs the government of a nation
National Myth
An event in a countries history that is not a major event but is crucial to their history.
