How did the enlightenment lead to the ideas of natural law?
- Their success convinced educated Europeans of the power of reason.
- Natural law could be used to solve social, political and economical problems.
- Free from ignorance, prejudice and superstition.

The great fear
1787 - 1789
- Depended heavily on agriculture
- Bad weather
- Food becomes very expensive
- People starving and the country not doing anything about it
- Poor harvest = many farmers unemployed
Estate general
- May of 1789
- It was represented by members of the 3 levels of society.
- The Estates-General had no true power but acted as an advisory body to the king by presenting petitions and consolting on fiscal policies.
Tennis court oath
- June 20, 1784
- The 3rd estate declared themselves a national assembly “
- They were 96% of the population and felt they were the “‘true parliment”
- the tennis court oath was a pivotal event in French Revolution
Storming of the Bastille
- King Louis accepts the changes of the tennis court oath.
- foreign troops loyal to the monarchy wer converging on Paris.
- In attempt to gain weapons, the people of paris stormed the Bastille.
- The Bastille was kings prison.
Declaration of the rights of man
- an essential document of the French Revolution that was passed in the National constitution.
- the document was based on natural laws
- it outlined freedom to property, liberty, social equality of all men and resistance to oppression

What are some factors that shaped nationalism? Historical Social Economic Geographic Political
Historical factors -the storming of Bastille
Social factors - the monarch and aristocrats, who also made up much of the high-ranking clergy in the Catholic Church, held most of the power.
Geographic factors-sever weather impacted the crops for farmers and food. The winters are cold and snow blocked the roads making travel impossible.
Political factors- In 1789, the national assembly had put finishing touches on the declaration of the right of man and of the citizen. Which eventually lead to the creation of a French nation based on new principles.

One of the causes of the French Revolution
Napoleonic code
- all people are equal before the law
- feudal rights were ended
- trial by jury is guaranteed
- religious freedom
- woman could not own property
- fathers were allowed to imprison their children
Concordat with the pope
The pope agreed that the church would not get it’s land back and in return, Catholicism was accepted as the religion of the majority
Infrastructure (Napoleon )
- he order the building of new roads, canals and bridges.
- Old buildings were fixed and new ones were built
- L’arc de triumph was built to celebrate Napoleons victories in wars

- intended to bring together French citizens
- the highest award a citizencould recieve
- it is still given out today
What does divine rights of kings mean?
Whenever he speaks you need to listen because it is coming from god / on behalf of god. Because not everyone will listen to the king but they will all listen to god.
