Intro to playing, C position, & The Grand Staff
What is proper posture?
- Sit tall
- Lean slightly forward
- Let arms hang loose from shoulders
- Elbows slightly higher than keys
- Bench must face the keyboard squarely
- Knees slightly under keyboard,
Feet flat on the floor. Right foot may be slightly forward.
What are the 4 good reasons to play with curved fingers?
- Each finger has, the same length.
- Brings the thumb into the correct playing position.
- Keys respond instantly. You are in control when you curve.
- Moving over the keys will require turning the thumb under the fingers and crossing fingers over the thumb. Curved fingers make it possible.
What are the finger numbers?
Both Hands
1 is the thumb
2 is the index
3 is the middle
4 is the ring
5 is the pinkie
What are the note names for Treble and Bass?
Treble: E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F
Bass: G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A
What is a quarter note?
A short note. 1 count.
What is a half note?
A long note. 2 counts.
What does a bar line do?
It divides the music into measures of equal duration.
What does a measure do?
Music divided by bar lines of equal duration
What does a double bar line do?
It is used at the end to indicate the end of a music piece.
What is a Treble Clef used for?
Used for the RH. Used for higher pitches.
What is a Bass Clef used for?
Used for LH. Used for lower pitches.
What is a Whole note?
A very long note. 4 counts.
What is the Grand Staff?
The bass staff and treble staff joined together with a brace make up the grand staff.
What does the Bracket/Brace do?
Brings the bass and treble staff together.
