Unit 1 Flashcards
(30 cards)
What makes one measurement more accurate than another?
Accurate = correct, more accurate+closer to accepted value
What makes one measurement more precise than another?
More precise= closer to place values marked on the measuring tool
Mass definition
Amount of matter in an object
Mass base unit
Grams (g)
Mass measurement tool
Scale
Length definition
Distance between two points
Length base unit
Meter (m)
Length measurement tool
Ruler
Volume definition
Amount of space something takes up
Volume base unit
Liter (L)
Volume measurement tool
Beaker / graduated cylinder
What info does percent error give you about a measurement?
Lower % error = more accurate
What is a “base unit”
Fundamental amount of a quantity
Four most common base units we will work with
Time -seconds
Length -meter
Mass -gram
Volume -liter
Difference between unit and symbol
Unit - tells you what you’re measuring and what system
Symbol - represents an unknown, ex: mass=m
How do prefixes work?
Come at the beginning of a word, never stand alone

Exponent
The coefficient must be greater than or equal to ____ and less than ____.
1, 10
How much is always 10?
The base
Independent variables
We change it
Dependent variable
the variable that changes as a result of the independent variable manipulation. It’s the outcome you’re interested in measuring, and it “depends” on your independent variable
Controlled variables
any variable that’s held constant in a research study. It’s not a variable of interest in the study, but it’s controlled because it could influence the outcomes.
