Q

What are ions?

A

Ions are atoms that have a different number of electrons than normal (normal being an atom having the same number of electrons as protons.

Q

Use particle theory to explain why a solid can change directly into a gas.

A

Sublimation happens when the particles inside a solid are heated to their boiling point, when this happens the particles get so excited that the forces of attraction holding them together are not strong enough to keep them together as a solid and the particles break off to become loose like a gas.

Q

why does a liquid have a fixed volume but no fixed shape?

A

Because the particles are not being held together by the forces of attraction as strongly as a solid but not as loosly as a gas the particles are free to move around ( such as in a container) but not so much that they lose their volume.
