Unit 2 Electricity Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is current and what is potential difference?
Current is the amount of charge passing through a certain point in a circuit per second.
Potential difference is the amount of potential energy between two points (like in between loads)
Current is how may electrons flow through a circuit whereas potential difference is how much force is propelling the electrons to flow.
What is the unit for resistance?
Ohm
What is the unit for current?
Amps
What is the unit for potential difference?
Volts
What four things determine the amount of resistance in a wire?
Thickness of the wire (diameter)
Length of wire.
Temperature.
Type of metal.
What is a resistor?
A resistor restricts the flow of electrons (electricity) through a circuit:
Why can two objects made of different materials develop an electric charge when rubbed together?
Because one of the objects is an insulator ( likes to gain electrons thus becoming negative or likes to hold on to electrons)
And the other is a conductor (likes to give up electrons)
What is Interpolation?
It means getting data between actual data points on a graph.
What does extrapolation mean?
It means getting info beyond the data points measured.
What is the calculation for Resistance?
R=V\I
What is the calculation to find Voltage?
V=R*I
What is the calculation for Current?
I=V/R
What does GRASS stand for?
G-Given-list the given info in the prob with units
R-Required-Identify the required equation
A-Analysis-Put the numbers into the equation
S-Solve-Calculate the answer with units
S-State- write a summary.
Should you round your decimal places?
Yes to the nearest number and only include up to one decimal place (1.3)
Use the grass method and solve this.
The current drawn by a clock is 0.50A when connected across a voltage of 110V. What is the resistance?
220 ohms
What is the equation to find Power?
P=I*V
What is the unit for Power?
Watt
How do you find the voltage with a power equation?
V=P/I
How do you find the Current in a power equation?
I=P/V
To find the slope (in other words the resistance) on a graph how many points for the c and y axis do you take?
2 from each, at any point except that they both have to be at the same line if you are looking and at a data chart and not a graph.
What is the difference between primary and secondary cells?
Primary can only be used once
Secondary can be recharged
What is an anode?
It is the more active electrode in a battery, it gives up electrons. It is labeled negative.
What is a cathode?
A cathode is an electrode that is less active than a anode. It is labeled positive.
