Unit 1: Chemical Changes and Structure Flashcards
Definitions (28 cards)
Temperature
Measure of how fast or slow particles move
Catalyst
Speeds up the rate of reaction but is not used up in the reaction.
Soluble
Can dissolve in water
Atomic Number
Equal to the number of protons in an atom
Ions
A charged particle
Isotopes
Atoms with the same atomic number, but different mass number
Relative Atomic Mass
Average mass of isotopes of an element
Molecules
Two or more atoms joined together by covalent bonds. A molecule is usually made from non-metals.
Covalent Bond
A shared pair of electrons between two non-metal atoms.
Diatomic molecules
Molecules made from two atoms
Ionic Bond
Electrostatic force of attraction between a positive metal ion and a negative non-metal ion.
Lattice
Regular arrangement of positive and negative ions.
Molten
Heat up by a Bunsen burner
Covalent network
Giant network of strong covalent bonds
Covalent molecules
Strong covalent bonds between atoms but only weak intermolecular bonds between molecules.
Chemical formula
Gives ratio of atoms or ions in a compound
Valency
Number of bonds an atom forms
Gram Formula Mass
Mass of one mole
Excess
More than enough for reaction to take place
Indicator
Chemical that can change colour in the presence of an acid or base
pH scale
Measure the Hydrogen ion concentration and tells us how acidic or basic a substance is
Base
Any substance that can neutralise an acid
Alkali
A soluble base
Dissociation
Breaks up
