Why did Great Britian settle in the New World? And where did they settle?
Gold, God, and Glory:
Marketing/trading, escape religious persecution, and conquer land. They settled in the Virgina and Massachusetts. Virginia was good for growing tabacco, while Massachusetts was founded to escape religious persecution.
What were the climates/purposes of each region in the colonies?
New England-had harsh winters, rocky soil, lots of forests; good for ship building, lumber and whaling.
Middle Colonies-had mild climate, moderate soil; also know as the “Bread Basket”, they grew lots of wheat, oats, and grains.
Southern Colonies-had rich soil, good climate, made great for plantations and growing cash crops.
What was mercantilism, and how did it impact the colonies?
Mercantilism is the trading system where Britian would give raw materials to the colonies for a high price. Then the colonies sold the goods made the material for a low price. This frustrated the colonists as the felt scammed.
Why did France explore the new world?
To build markets and trade with Natives. This would help with the economy.
Why did Spain explore the new world?
To establish missionaries to convert people into Christians, or spread religion.
