Unit 1- Exam Revision Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an element?
Are substance that contain only one type of atom
What is a molecule?
Molecules are substances that consist of two or more atoms that are chemically combined.
What is a compound?
Are substances that contain two or more elements but not all compounds.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
What is the ground state?
The least excited state of an atom, where the electrons are occupying the lowest possible energy levels.
What is the excited state?
Raised to a higher than ground level energy state.
What is the electron configuration?
The arrangement of electrons in the shells of an atom.
What is an ion?
An atom that has lost or gained electrons
What is a cation?
A positively charged ion
What is an anion?
A negatively charged ion
What do metals form?
Metals form positive ions.
Non- metallic ion formation
Non-metallics gain electrons to achieve a noble gas configuration of eight electrons in their outer shell.
