Definition of health
a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
limitations of health definitions
- “complete” health and wellbeing in all dimensions is difficult to attain
-spiritual health is not considered
definition of wellbeing
(A state of being happy, healthy and contented)
Dimensions of health
Physical - relates to the functioning of the body and its systems
Social - relates to the state and quality of the interactions and relationships that an individual has
Emotional/mental: The current state of wellbeing relating to the mind or brain and includes the ability to think and process information
Spiritual - relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise kn the kinds and conscience of humans
Determinants of health
Physical environment - the surrounding place and conditions in which we live, work and play
Socio-cultural environment - the social and cultural conditions into which people are born and live
Political environment - the different levels of government all make policies and laws related to public health
biological factors - these factors relate to how adequately the body functions
behavioural factors - these are the choices people make in their lives that impact their health status
what is health promotion
the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health
what is health literacy
understanding and being able to act on information and about health and health care
what is a health issue
refer to problems of the functioning of the body and include a wide range of diseases and conditions
what are some low and high profile health issues
low: COPD, Pancreatic cancer, back pain
high: COVID, breast cancer, suicide
what are health indicators
standard statistics that are used to measure and compare health status
what are the 5 health indicators
life expectancy
health adjusted life expectancy
mortality
morbidity
burden of disease (DALY)
what is a risk factor
specific aspects of determinants that are detrimental to health
what does mortality mean and why do we look at them
relates to death, often at a specific population level
helps to develop funding and strategies
what is morbidity and why do we look at it
ill health of an individual and levels of ill health within a population
provides information about the total number of people with a particular condition at a given time
