Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design Flashcards
(18 cards)
Claim
based on testing explanations against observations of the natural world and rejecting the ones that fail the test
Constant
the proportion of a substance contained in an alloy, mixture, etc
Evidence
information collected via rigorous scientific methods that changes their belief in the truth of factual claims of the first to the fourth kind.
Experimental bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment.
Experimental control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables
Experimental procedure
Experimental science is the search for cause-and-effect relationships in nature.
Hypothesis
A statement about a specific research question, and it outlines the expected result of the experiment.
Manipulated variable
the factor that an experimenter intentionally changes or alters during an experiment to observe its effect on another variable,
Qualitative data
qualitative data is descriptive, expressed in terms of language rather than numerical values.
Quantitative data
any information that can be quantified — that is, numbers
Reason
the ability to recognize and understand the scientific method, concepts, processes, and applications used in the pursuit of knowledge.
Responding variable
the part of an experiment that a scientists measures and observes closely for a change or a response.
Scientific method
the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation.
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Scientific question
one where an investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer without having to do multiple, entirely different investigations to get there
Scientific theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment
Trends in data
the general direction that something moves or changes over a long period
Valid experiment
a measure of how correct the results of an experiment are
