Juxtaposition:
To deliberately place side by side for emphasis.
EXAMPLE: In “TSLOWM” Walter’s real and imaginary lives are placed side by side to create humour and discrepancy.
Flashback:
Writer presents scenes/incidents that occurred prior to the start of the story.
EXAMPLE: In “SC” Barry and Moira refer to Ron, a man who fell when rock climbing. It regards that Barry doesn’t want what happened to Ron, to happen to Moira. She replies “Do you think I’m that stupid!”
Hyperbole:
A deliberate exaggeration of words.
EXAMPLE: In “TCOA” Montresor claims Fortunato caused him 1000 “injuries” and “insults”, which isn’t possible. It shows his anger.
Oxymoron:
Combination of two words that are opposites.
EXAMPLE: The title of “SS” because singing cannot be silent.
Allusion:
Reference to a person, place, event or object from history, literature, mythology or the bible.
EXAMPLE: In “F451” reference to three authors. “Monday burn Millay, Wednesday whiteman and Friday Faulkner”
Allegory:
A story with two meanings, a literal meanings and symbolic meaning.
EXAMPLE: In “MI”
