Foil:
A character who contrasts another, bringing out distinctive characteristics.
EXAMPLE - Clarisse and Mildred foil each other (Clarisse is caring, knowledable and empathetic, where Mildred is apathetic, ignorant and lacks empathy.)
Foreshadow:
Author gives hints about what is going to happen later on in the novel.
EXAMPLE - Montag looks up at the ventilator grill in his home, foreshadowing that he has books hidden there. This will tell us that Montag is rebellious, and changing.
Paradox:
A statement that is absurd or self contradicting, and brings emphasis to something.
EXAMPLE - When Mrs. Bowles says the poem Montag reads to her is silly, but she is then brought to tears by it. Her initial annoyance by it, contradicts her end feeling of sadness.
Quest:
A mission/journey towards a goal that a hero embarks on, they have the odds stacked against them, is ordinary and faces many obstacles.
EXAMPLE - Montag’s quest for saving society.
Dystopia:
A society that is frightening and most likely post apocalyptic.
EXAMPLE - The society in Fahrenheit 451.
