Unit 1- The Earth And The Universe Flashcards
(13 cards)
Live on Earth
Live on earth thanks to atmosphere that protect us from sun and gives us oxygen. The distance from the sun give us the perfect temperature to be alive. The presence of liquid water is allowed for live forms.
The solar system
The Earth belongs to the solar system. Planetary system are celestial bodies that orbit around a star. Stars emit their own light thanks to gases combustion. Galaxies are group of planetary systems, our galaxy is The Milky Way.
Parallels
Are imaginary lines, from the North Pole to the South Pole. The Equator divides the Earth in 2. There are other main parallels. Lines of latitude.
Meridians
Are lines of latitude, join the North with the South, Prime Meridian is a reference of measuring longitude.
Latitude
Is the distance between a point on the Earth’s surface and the Equator.
Longitude
Is the distance between a point on the Earth’s surface and the Greenwich Meridian.
Polar flattening
At the Equator, the Earth spins at 1,678 km/h, while at the poles , the velocity is close to 0.
What’s the sexagesimal system? Why do geographic coordinates use this numeral system?
The numeral system. To measure angular distances.
Where does the Sun rise sooner? Why?
In the East. Because the Earth spins towards the East.
Relation between the Moon and the tides. Explain its fases
The tides are the fall of the ocean and the sea levels. These are a result of the attraction of the Sun and the Moon on the Earth.
Phases 1, 3:The difference is greater
Phases 2,4: The difference is lower.
Why is our planet bulged at the Equator and flatten at poles?
Because, at the Equator, the Earth’s spins at a velocity of 1,670 km/h, while at the Poles, the velocity is close to 0. Therefore, centrifugal force around the Equator is much greater than at the Poles.
Seasons, solstices and equinoxes
Spring equinox: winter/summer
Summer solstice: autumn/spring
Autumn equinox: summer/winter
Winter solstice: spring/autumn
According to scale, how many kilometres does one centimeter represent?
O’5 km.
