Unit 1.1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
State the function of the mitochondria
The site of aerobic respiration in plant and animal cells
State the function of the chloroplasts
The site of photosynthesis in a plant cell
State the function of the cell membrane
Controls what comes in and goes out of the cell (selectively permeable)
State the function of the cytoplasm
Site of chemical reactions in the cell
State the function of the vacuole
A large, cell sap filled space in plant cells
State the function of the nucleus
Contains DNA and controls all the cells activities
State the function of the ribosomes
Bead shaped organelles which are the site of protein synthesis
What is the name of the small circular pieces of DNA in bacterial cells?
Plasmids
Describe the composition and functions of the cell wall.
The cell wall is fully permeable, provides structure and support to the cell, is made of cellulose in plant cells but different materials in fungi and bacterial cells.
Where is the genetic material of a bacterial cell found?
Free in the cytoplasm
State three differences between animal and plant cells.
Plant cells have a cell wall, vacuole and chloroplasts, while animal cells do not.
Convert 5 mm to µm:
5000µm.
What does the bacteria cell use to move?
Flagellum
What is the cell wall in Fungi cells made of?
chitin
What is the cell wall in bacterial cells made of?
peptidoglycan
What are plasmids?
Small circular pieces of DNA in bacterial cells.
