Unit 12 Flashcards
(8 cards)
How can charges be transferred from one object to another? What happens to the charge of each object during this process?
- by moving electrons
- one becomes positive, one becomes negative
What is the definition of current?
- the flow of electrons
- the amount of charges per second moving past a point
What direction does current travel
From the positive to the negative terminal
What is the definition of electric potential difference (voltage)?
The energy the charges carry
What does a battery do in a circuit?
Provides the energy to the circuit
What is the definition of resistance?
The hinderence of the flow of electrons/current
List the four factors that affect resistance and describe how they affect the resistance
- length of wire: as length goes up, resistance goes up
- temperature: as temperature goes up, resistance goes up
- cross sectional area: as the cross sectional area goes up, resistance goes down
- material: if it is a conductor, resistance goes down. If it is an insulator, resistance goes up
What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator?
Conductors allow current to flow, insulators do not
