Imperialism
One’s country domination of another’s economic, political, and cultural institutions.
Mercantilism
Government controlled trade, trade must favour the home country.
The Grand Exchange
Christopher Columbus returning with seeds, fruit trees and livestock in 1493, this changed the diet of the world and began the grand exchange.
Industrialization
The development of industries in a country or region on a wide scale.
Capitalism
An economic system based on the private ownership of the factors of production.
Apartheid
A system of racial segregation that existed in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s.
Ethnocentrism
Refers to a way of thinking that centers on one’s own race
and culture. You judge other people according to your own beliefs, customs and traditions.
Eurocentrism
A worldview or belief centered on and biased towards western civilization
Industrial Revolution
18th-19th century, Europe, new technology and manufacturing process.
Deindustrialization
Decline in industrial activity in a region or economy.
Assimilation
Cultural identity of the minority group disappears as its members take on the identity of the other culture.
Cultural Genocide
Destroying a groups, language, customs, values, traditions, etc.
Genocide
The deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.
Accommodation
Accepting and creating space for one another, providing and equal opportunity for participation of different groups in society.
Acculturation
Cultural changes that occur when two cultures accommodate of adapt to each other’s worldview.
Intergenerational Trauma
The psychological damage that occurs when the emotional and behavioural reactions of a traumatic event experienced by an ancestor or older relative are passed down through generations.
Exploitation
The act of making use of something for ones advantage.
Beothuk
An indigenous group living on Newfoundland.
Colony
A country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country.
Colonialism
The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
Depopulation
Reduction of population in an area.
Protectorate
A country that is protected by a larger, stronger one.
Urbanization
The concentration of human populations into distinct areas.
