How many parts is the book of Exodus divided into?
Three parts:
* The CALL: God called Moses to lead the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt
* The COVENANT: The Hebrews must obey the 10 Commandments
* The TEST: God let the Hebrews wander 40 years in the desert
What is the significance of The CALL in the book of Exodus?
It represents God’s call for Moses to lead the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt.
What does The COVENANT entail for the Hebrews?
The Hebrews must obey the 10 Commandments, and in return, God promises to watch over and guide them.
What is the purpose of The TEST in the story of Moses?
To see if the Hebrews would be faithful in keeping the 10 Commandments during their 40 years of wandering.
How does God appear to Moses?
Through a burning bush.
Why are the Israelites called the ‘Chosen People’?
Because they have a special responsibility to fulfill God’s LAWS.
What do the plagues represent in the story of Moses?
They are a sign of God’s initiative to free Israel.
How many plagues are there and what are they?
10 plagues:
* Water turning into blood
* Frogs
* Gnats
* Flies
* Livestock
* Boils
* Thunder and hail
* Locusts
* Darkness
* Death of first born
How is the covenant of Moses different from the other covenants?
It emphasizes treating one another well to please God.
What did God give the Israelites as part of the covenant?
The 10 Commandments.
How are the 10 Commandments divided?
Into two kinds:
* Commands that unite us to God (Commands 1-3)
* Commands that unite us to others (Commands 4-10)
What is the intent and purpose of the 10 Commandments?
To provide freedom and peace to the community.
What do God’s laws free us from?
Slavery to error and sin.
What is God’s test to the Israelites after receiving the Commandments?
Their faith in God was tested during their 40 years of wandering.
