Q

Describe how God is perfect in

Holiness, Wisdom, Power, and Love

A

God’s holiness is His divine quality that differentiates God from us. Because of His holiness we are brought to a sense of awe by our awareness of unworthiness in the presence of divine holiness.

In His wisdom God is actively involved with His creation and the fulfillment of His purposes. God knows all things and walks with us. God’s wisdom is tireless. In wisdom He gave His people the Law so we could live in right relationship with Him. The teachings of Jesus express God’s wisdom.

The cross reveals the deepest dimensions of God’s power in Jesus’ apparent weakness which disarms the powers of darkness and wins is our Salvation. The power of God is a remedy for our weakness.

God’s love cannot be defined as passing emotions or indulgence in cheap or vague worship. In His love He continues to be faithful to us and to lead us towards holiness. His love is what defines his holiness, wisdom, and power.

11
Q

Be familiar with the diagram expressing truths of the Trinity

A

The diagram is an upside down triangle with 4 circles. One circle “God” is at the center, three circles are in the three corners “The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit”.

There are connectors from God to each aspect of His character stating that God IS Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

Connecting the outer three circles of the triangle are statements of what these aspect are NOT. The Father is not The Son, The Son is not The Holy Spirit, The Holy Spirit is not The Father.

Q

Three Trinitarian heresies

A

Modalism: the idea that God projects himself in three modes caused by the impulse to avoid the idea of three god’s BUT brings loss of relationship between three distinct persons.

Tritheism: the belief that three persons have three different personalities. An impulse to protect the identity of three persons but loses oneness of God.

Subordinationism: belief that the Father is superior to the son and the Holy Spirit.

17
Q

Is the word trinity found in the scripture? Is in the principle of the trinity evident in the scripture?

A

The word trinity is not in the scriptures.

OT describes that the one God who is creator and redeemer cannot be contained in simple monotheism. Psalm 139:7 shows God’s presence in spiritual form (where can I go from your spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?) Also a God who acts personally through His word as in Psalm 33:6 “by the word of the Lord the heavens were made” The OT is preparing the way to show the revelation that God is in Jesus.

NT early Christians begin to worship Jesus as Lord with no sense that they were denying the oneness of God Philippians 2:6-11 “Jesus who being in the form of God did not consider it robbery to be equal to God…God has also exalted Him and given Him the name that is above every other name that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess…” A new understanding of the nature of God was emerging in Jesus’ life, ministry, death and resurrection.
Writers of the New Testament saw meaning in Old Testament writings. They stressed the inter-relatedness of Father, Son, and Spirit in the great work of salvation 1 Peter 1:2 “according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ”

Creation and Redemption are acts of a relational loving God.

18
Q

Be able to discuss the problem of evil (natural& moral) and the possible response to this dilemma.

A

The problem of evil : an omnipresent God should be aware of the presence of evil.
An omniscient God should know how to overcome all the evil.
An omnipotent God should be able to enforce victory over evil.
A God of love should desire to get rid of evil.
Yet…evil plagues us all.
Evil consists of: Wars, murder, oppression, abuse, hunger, starvation, homelessness etc…

Moral evil includes all suffering that is a result of human agency.

Natural evil includes results of hurricanes, volcanoes, deadly diseases…

A possible response to this dilemma is our free will given by God.
