Standard solutions and titrations (29 cards)

1
Q

What is titration used for?

A

We can use it to find the amount of something. It is quantitative

2
Q

What does titration involve?

A

the measurement of a known solution with a known concentration (titrant) is used to find the concentration of the unknown analyte

3
Q

What happens at the endpoint of a titration?

A

A colour change. Can use an indicator to make this happen

16
Q

What is the unit for concentration?

17
Q

What is an ionic bond?

A

the transfer of electrons. The ions are then attracted to each other by electrostatic forces

18
Q

What is oxidation?

A

Loss of electrons

19
Q

What is reduction?

A

Gain of electrons

20
Q

What are oxidation numbers used for?

A

To keep track of electrons in a reaction. Its like the charges.

21
Q

What is the oxidation state of an atom in an element?

22
Q

What is the oxidation state of oxygen?

A

-2 (except when its 0₂⁻² this case its -1)

23
Q

What is the oxidation state of hydrogen?

24
Q

What is the oxidation state of fluorine?

25
What is a reducing agent?
something that reduces something. It is oxidised itself
26
In titrations you need to look at what to work out unknowns?
The ratio of reactants. So if you can work out the number of moles of one reactant and its a 1:1 ratio the unknown reactant will have the same
27
How do you make half equations
Make two reactions splitting the oxidation and reduction halfs. You can balance them separately
28
How do you calculate molarity?
Moles of solute/ Litres of solution
29
Molarity triangle?
Moles of solute | Molarity X Vol (L)
