Unit 2 AOS 2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Internal Stimuli
information or sensations that originate from within the body e.g. hunger, experiencing pain
External Stimuli
information or sensations that originate from outside the body e.g. things we see, hear, touch or taste
Attention
actively focusing on or processing specific information while simultaneously ignoring other information
What is the purpose of Attention?
Attention allows us to process our world effectively and efficiently, as there is too much information for us to understand it all
Sustained attention
focusing on one specific stimulus/task for a prolonged, continuous period of time
Divided attention
involves attempting to split attention across two or more stimuli at the same time
Selective Attention
Involves exclusively focusing on a specific stimulus with active ignoring of other stimuli/tasks (distractions)
Sensation
the process of receiving and detecting raw sensory information and transmitting it to the brain
Perception
the process of selecting, organising and interpreting sensory information in order to give it meaning
Visual sensory system
- Reception: light is detected and enters the retina detected by photoreceptors (rods (shadows) + cones (colours))
- Transduction: convert light energy into a neural message (or electrochemical signal)
- Transmission: neural message is sent along the optic nerve, to the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe
- Selection: our brain selects certain stimuli to pay attention to while ignoring others
- Organisation: we group together pieces of stimuli and rearrange to create a whole picture
- Interpretation: give meaning to sensory information using internal and external cues
Bottom-up processing
perception is determined by how the incoming information appears, typically used when the information is unfamiliar to us or is highly complex
