Q

What is the purpose of Attention?

A

Attention allows us to process our world effectively and efficiently, as there is too much information for us to understand it all

A

Involves exclusively focusing on a specific stimulus with active ignoring of other stimuli/tasks (distractions)

Q

Visual sensory system

A
  1. Reception: light is detected and enters the retina detected by photoreceptors (rods (shadows) + cones (colours))
  2. Transduction: convert light energy into a neural message (or electrochemical signal)
  3. Transmission: neural message is sent along the optic nerve, to the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe
  4. Selection: our brain selects certain stimuli to pay attention to while ignoring others
  5. Organisation: we group together pieces of stimuli and rearrange to create a whole picture
  6. Interpretation: give meaning to sensory information using internal and external cues

Q

Bottom-up processing

A

perception is determined by how the incoming information appears, typically used when the information is unfamiliar to us or is highly complex
