UNIT 2- chemistry Flashcards
(23 cards)
Atoms
All matter solids liquids and gases is composed of atoms. But what exactly are atoms atoms are basic
Molecules
The smallest particle of a substance that has all of the physical and chemical properties of that substance
Substances
Any material that possesses physical properties
Homogenous us mixtures
a gaseous, liquid or solid mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample.
Heterogeno us mixtures
a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture.
Chemical properties
a characteristic of a substance that may be observed when it participates in a chemical reaction.
Isotopes
Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Physical properties
a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance.
Elements
A basic part of a whole.
Compounds
a substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined.
Reactants
the atoms and molecules that interact with each other
Products
durable goods (such as cars, furniture, and computers)
Hydrogen Bonds
A hydrogen bond is an intermolecular force (IMF) that forms a special type of dipole-dipole attraction when a hydrogen
Covalent Bonds
the interatomic linkage that results from the sharing of an electron pair between two atoms
Ionic Bonds
type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound
Cation
An anion may be defined as an atom or molecule that is negatively charged. A cation may be defined as an atom or molecule that is positively charged.
Anion
an atom that has more electrons than protons
Periodic table -groups
A table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number, usually in rows
Periodic Table Rows
a row of chemical elements
Valence Electrons
the electrons located at the outermost shell of an atom.
pH scale
measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is.
Acids
A chemical that gives off hydrogen ions in water and forms salts by combining with certain metals.
Bases
the bottom of something considered as its support
