Unit 3 List 2- Cell Cycle Flashcards
Anaphase
The stage of the cell cycle in which duplicated chromosomes separate and move towards opposite poles of the cell
Cancer
A disease caused when cells divide uncontrollably and spread into surrounding tissues.
Cancer Checkpoints
Help keep immune responses from being too strong and sometimes can keep T cells from killing cancer cells.
Cell Cycle
A series of events that takes place in a cell as it grows and divides.
Cell Differentiation
The process during which young, immature (unspecialized) cells take on individual characteristics and reach their mature (specialized) form and function.
Centrioles
Paired barrel-shaped organelles located in the cytoplasm of animal cells near the nuclear envelope.
Centromere
The region of the chromosome to which the spindle fiber is attached during cell division
Chromatid
One of the two identical halves of a chromosome that has been replicated in preparation for cell division.
Chromatin
Chromosomes
A structure found inside the nucleus of a cell.
Cytokinesis
The physical process of cell division, which divides the cytoplasm of a parental cell into two daughter cells.
Interphase
The phase of the cell cycle in which a typical cell spends most of its life.
Metaphase
A stage during the process of cell division (mitosis or meiosis).
Mitosis
The process by which a single parent cell divides to make two new daughter cells.
Nucleolus
A spherical structure found in the cell’s nucleus whose primary function is to produce and assemble the cell’s ribosomes.
Prophase
The first stage in the process of mitosis.
Stem Cells
Cells with the potential to develop into many different types of cells in the body.
Telophase
The last step of cell division, when chromosomes move in opposite directions so two new cells can be formed from one.
