Unit 2 - Energy in Earth Science Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work, make things move and cause change.
What is thermal energy?
Thermal Energy is the energy of those moving particles that is felt as heat, and is the primary cause of atmospheric activity.
What law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It only changes form.
1st
In which of the following states are particles of matter packed closest together? Solid, Liquid, or Gas?
Solid
Heat transfer will always go from _______________ concentration to _______________ concentration
Higher; Lower
What are the three methods of heat transfer?
Radiation; Convection; Conduction
What is Radiation?
Radiation the transfer of heat energy through electromagnetic waves.
What is Convection?
Convection is the transfer of heat energy that occurs in liquids and gases where material of warmer temperatures rises and cooler temperatures sink, forming a rotating cell called a convection current.
What is Conduction?
Conduction is the transfer of heat energy that occurs when two objects are touching one another and have different temperatures.
Name one wave on the electromagnetic spectrum.
Radio Waves; Microwaves; Infrared Waves; Visible Light Waves; Ultraviolet Waves; X - Ray Waves; Gamma Ray Waves
Where might we find convection currents on Earth?
In the scale of the Earth
Mantle; atmosphere
