Unit 2 - Lesson 4 - Fertilisation Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is fertilisation?
The fusion of the male gametes and the female gametes, forming a zygote.
What type of cell is a gamete?
Haploid cell
What are gametes?
An organism’s reproductive cell or in other words sex cells.
What are male gametes called?
Pollen
What are female gametes called?
Egg Cells
What is the first step in fertilization?
Pollination – Pollen from the anther (male part) is transferred to the stigma (female part) of a flower.
What is the second step in fertilization?
Pollen Tube Formation – Once on the stigma, the pollen grain grows a tube down the style towards the ovary.
What is the third step of fertilization?
The pollen tube carries the male gamete (sperm cell) through the style to reach the ovule inside the ovary.
What is the fourth step of fertilization.
The male gamete joins with the female gamete (egg cell) inside the ovule. This forms a zygote, which will grow into a new plant.
What is the fifth step of fertilization?
Seed Formation – After fertilization, the ovule develops into a seed, and the ovary often becomes a fruit to protect the seed.
