Unit 2 - Lesson 7 - Germination Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is germination?
A process, controlled by enzymes in which the seed begins to develop into a new young plant.
What are the three main factors needed for successful germination?
Water
Oxygen
Warmth
Why is water essential in germination?
Let’s the seed swell and the embryo start to grow.
Why is oxygen essential in germination?
Needed for aerobic respiration.
Why is warmth essential for germination?
Increases growth role and enzyme activity (but very high temperatures denature enzymes).
Why do germination seeds use their food stores?
So until the seedlings can produce their own food by photosynthesis.
What is the first step of germination?
Water Absorption
- Seed Swells
- Activation of Enzymes
What is the second step of germination?
Activation of Enzymes
Starch is broken by amylase into Maltese which broken down by molten into glucose which is broken down by oxygen through a process called aerobic respiration helping the radical to grow.
What is the third step of germination?
Radical = ancharage + absorb –> mineral + ions = water
