Unit 2 Minecraft Flashcards
(33 cards)
Pangaea
the hypothetical landmass that existed when all continents were joined
Continental drift
the gradual movement of the continents across the earth’s surface through geological time.
Mid-Ocean ridges
a long, seismically active submarine ridge system situated in the middle of an ocean basin and marking the site of the magma associated with seafloor spreading
Ocean trenches
narrow depressions on the seafloor
Seafloor Spreading
the formation of new areas of oceanic crust
Magma
Molten rock underground.
Lava
hot molten rock erupted from a volcano
Plate tectonics
a theory explaining the structure of the earth’s crust and many associated phenomena as resulting from the interaction of rigid lithospheric plates which move slowly over the underlying mantle.Plate tectonics
Convergent boundaries
A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving toward each other.
Divergent boundaries
A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving away from each other and new crust is forming
Transform boundaries
that the Earth is transformed by its movement
Subduction
the sideways and downward movement of the edge of a plate of the earth’s crust into the mantle beneath another plate.
Vault
vault is an arched part of the earth
Volcano
a mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava
Volcano arc
a curving chain of active volcanoes formed above a subduction zone
Earthquake
a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction
Fault zone
there are several closely spaced faults
Landslide
the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope
Tsunami
giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea
Impact craters
a crater on a planet or moon caused by the impact of a meteorite or other object, typically circular with a raised rim.
Weathering
Erosion
Deposition
the action of deposing someone, especially a monarch.
Glacier
a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles.
