What is an output device?
Hardware devices that allow information to be sent out of a computer system - show the results of processing
2
What are CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors used for?
instantly see outputs - monitor screen
3
What are the advantages of CRT?
Can be used with a light pen
Produce a large range of colours
Have a good screen angle
Cheaper than other options
4
What are the disadvantages of CRT?
Large and bulky
Create a lot of heat
Have a lot of screen glare
Use more power and therefore are more expensive to run
5
What are TFT (thin film resistor) monitors used for?
instantly see outputs - monitor screen - thin, flat screen
6
What are the advantages of TFT?
Lightweight
Very thin
Less glare
Uses less power
Emits less radiation
Emits less heat
7
What are the disadvantages of TFT?
Images can be unclear
Lower picture quality
Cannot be used with light pens
8
What are laser printers used for?
Use toner pressed onto a page to produce printed documents. Can print large amounts at a very quick rate.
Popular in schools, businesses and offices
9

Toner cartridges last a long time
Can handle high volumes of printing
Very quiet when printing
Very high quality print outs
Reliable
Cheaper to run than other printers
10
What are the disadvantages of laser printers?
Environmentally unfriendly - produce ozone, use more power than inkjets
Laser printers are more expensive to buy
Larger in size
11
What are the uses of Inkjet printers?
Produce high quality hard copies via an ink cartridge.
12
What are the advantages of inkjet printers?
Out put is high quality
cheaper than laser printers
smaller than laser printers
Do not produce ozone
Quiet when printing
13
What are the disadvantages of inkjet printers?
Slow printing rates
Ink cartridges don't last long
Can be expensive to run
Printouts can easily smudge
14
What are the uses of Dot Matrix Printers?
Produces an imprint on the paper by pins being pressed against an ink ribbon.
15
What are the advantages of Dot Matrix Printers?
Work in environments where other printers might break
Carbon copies can be made
Very cheap
Good for continuous printing
16
What are the disadvantages of Dot Matrix Printers?
Very noisy
Very slow
Very poor print quality
17
What are the uses of a Plotter?
Produce hard copies on very large pieces of paper by using a flatbed or a drum, e.g. blue prints
18
What are the advantages of using a Plotter?
Produce much larger printouts
Print quality is extremely high
Can cut out designs for sign making
19
What are the disadvantages of using a Plotter?
Very slow
Very expensive
