Unit 2: Perception Vocab Flashcards
(35 cards)
Perception
The process of organizing and interpreting information enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events
Top-Down Processing
Guided by higher-level mental processes, such as experience, motivation, and expectations
Inattentional Blindness
failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere
Change Bilndness
failing to notice a visual change when our attention is directed elsewhere
Gestalt Psychology
emphasizes our tendency to integrate pieces of information into meaningful wholes (we look at things in groups and not as isolated elements).
Figure Ground Relationship
Our first perceptual decision is what is the image is the figure and what is the background
Gestalt Proximity
grouping objects that are close together as being part of the same group
Gestalt Similarity
objects similar in appearance are perceived as being part of the same group
Gestalt Continuity
objects that from a continuous form are perceived as the same group
Gestalt Connectedness
we perceived things that are uniform and linked to be a single unit
Depth Perception
ability to see objects in three dimensions. It also allows us to judge distance
Depth Cues
Seeing depth using two Cues (Binocular Cues and Monocular Cues)
Monocular Cues
Methods used by a single eye to judge depth perception (Linear Perspective, Interposition, Light and shadow, Relative Height, and Relative size)
Binocular Cues
Methods used by both eyes to judge depth perception
Retinal Disparity
A type of Binocular Cue
As an object comes closer to us, the differences in images between our eyes becomes greater
Convergence
A type of Binocular Cues
As an object comes closer, our eyes have to come together to keep focused on the object
Phi Phenomenon
Illusion of movement created when two or more adjacent lights blink on and off in quick succession
Perceptual Constancy
Perceiving objects as unchanging even as illumination and retinal image change (color, shape, size)
Perceptual Set
A mental predisposition to perceive one thing and not another (predisposition: likely to behave a certain way because of influence)
Shape constancy
Understanding that an object’s shape stays the same even when it looked like it changed due to the angle we look at it from
Color Constancy
Ability to see the colors of objects as the same, even when lighting changes around them
Size Constancy
Perceiving an object as being the same size, even when it appears larger or smaller depending on its distance from us
Stroboscopic Movement
The illusion of motion created when a series of still images are shown quickly, one after the other
Autokinetic Effect
Visual illusion where a small, stationary light in a dark room appears to move, even though it’s not actually moving
