Unit 2 "Plants for food and fiber" Flashcards
(14 cards)
A movement of liquid or gas from high concentration to low concentration.
Diffusion
Diffusion of water or any liquid through a semipermeable/differentially permeable membrane.
Osmosis
Carries water and minerals- one-way flow up to leaves
Xylem
Carries water and food (sugar) in a two-way flow to and from roots to leaves.
Phloem
Absorb water and minerals, support and anchor the plant and store food for the plant.
Three main functions of roots?
transport water and nutrients between leaves and roots, provide support and food storage for the plant.
Roles of stems
What are leaves
energy producers of the plant.
Waste products of photosynthesis
Glucose and Oxygen.
What does photosynthesis require
Carbon dioxide, water and sunlight
What happens to the products of photosynthesis
Glucose is used by the plant and oxygen is respired through the leaves=by product.
Two processes involved in gas exchange
Transpiration & respiration.
Stomata
Opening under the leaf that allows for gas exchange.
Loss of water from a plant through evaporation.
Transpiration
Process by which plants release carbon dioxide and take in oxygen→ happens more at night (when photosynthesis is not occurring).
Respiration
