What are the conventions of the ‘Comedy’ Genre?
- Character who’s always getting into trouble/ making mistakes.
- Character who’s relatable & we can sympathise with.
- Things look good at start but plot point by plot point things get more challenging/
ridiculous. - Dramatic irony – reader can see it coming.
- Every day setting – school/ work place – relatable.
- Hyperbolic language & situations.
- Lots of dialogue between character & exclamatory sentences

What are the conventions of the ‘Detective/ Mystery’ Genre?
- Usually cliff hangers.
- Many plot twists.
- Character uses sophisticated tone - Detective themselves, low frequency lexis.
- Uneventful start to story – something big happens they investigate.

What are the conventions of the ‘Romance’ Genre?
- Character tend to be stereotypically likeable.
- Setting tends to be cities & towns – urban setting.
- Quite a predictable plot.
- Positive lexis & tone.

What are the conventions of the ‘Horror’ Genre?
- Main character often likeable – they end up being victim in some way.
- Plot twists – guessing game of some sorts.
- Suspense.
- Descripting is very important.
- Setting is often dark & superstitious abandoned settings.
- Written in third person.
- Dramtic irony.

What are the conventions of the ‘Sci-Fi/ Fantasy’ Genre?
- Some form of idealism.
- First person perspective.
- Utopian tone – ideal world.
- Personal idealism.
- Adjectives, similes, metaphors.
- Current life to aspirational life- a different world.
- Alternate life form.
- Could be good or evil.
- Unusual habitats.
- Plot to take over world etc.
- Third person perspective.

What are the conventions of the ‘Action/ Adevnture’ Genre?
- Unfamiliar places like jungles.
- Lots of show don’t tell.
- Always someone with some sort of supernatural power.
- In city areas – lots of people in.

What is a ‘Frozen level’ as tone/ level of formality?
Set phrases in ceremonial, ritual or very conventional situations.

What is a ‘Formal level’ as tone/ level of formality?
Normally used by a speaker addressing an audience where interaction & interruption are not normally permitted.

What is a ‘Consultative level’ as tone/ level of formality?
Used in exchanges between people who are not family, friends or acquaintances but where interaction is the norm.

What is a ‘Casual level’ as tone/ level of formality?
Used by people who know each other reasonably well in informal settings. Interruption would be permitted or even expected.

What is a ‘Intimate level’ as tone/ level of formality?
Private level reserved for family or close friends, they may ise invented words or code.

- Friendly.
