Unit 2 Vocab - Introductory Chemistry Flashcards
(25 cards)
Any substance that occupies space
Matter
A pure substance consisting entirely of one atom
Element
The body that contains large quantities of these elements
Major element
The body that contains lesser amounts of these elements
Minor element
The body that contains very small amounts of these elements
Trace element
The most basic unit of matter
Atom
A particle of energy that has a positive charge
Proton
A particle of energy that has a negative charge
Electron
A particle of energy that has a neutral charge
Neutron
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, giving the atom its identity as a particular chemical element
Atomic Number
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Mass number
Electrons in the outermost electron shell that are responsible for bonding
Valence Electrons
An atom or molecule that has lost or gained electrons and thus carried an electric charge, either positive or negative
Ion
A type of chemical bond in which atoms transfer valence electrons
Ionic bond
A type of chemical bond in which atoms share valence electrons
Covalent bond
A positively charged ion
Canion
A negatively charged ion
Anion
A substance made up of 2 or more atoms held together by bonds
Molecule
A substance composed of 2 or more elements
Compound
A chemical process that involves changes in the structure (and energy) content of atoms, molecules, or ions
Chemical reaction
A representation of an entire chemical reaction using chemical symbols and contains the products and reactants
Chemical equation
A letter abbreviation of a chemical element; symbols in periodic table
Chemical symbol
A number that is written below a letter
Subscript
Reference to the starting materials in a chemical reaction
Reactant
