Unit 3 Corrections Flashcards
(18 cards)
What name is given to a scientific article that summarises current knowledge and recent findings in a particular field?
Review article
What name is given to studies which involve combinations of treatments?
Multifactorial
What are the 5 stages (in order) of the Scientific Cycle?
- Form a hypothesis
- Design experiment
- Gather and analyse data
- Draw conclusions
- Form a new hypothesis
What is a null hypothesis?
A hypothesis that states there will be no statistically significant effect as a result of an experimental treatment.
What are the 3 R’s when it comes to ethics in animal studies?
Replace
Reduce
Refine
What is replacement when it comes to ethics in animal studies?
When animals are replaced with non animal alternatives where possible. (i.e. cell cultures).
What is reducing when it comes to ethics in animal studies?
The number of animals used is reduced to the minimum needed to achieve the results sought.
What is refinement when it comes to ethics in animal studies?
For the animals which must be used, procedures are refined as much as possible to minimise their suffering.
What is the independent variable?
The variable being changed
What is the dependent variable?
The variable being measured
Define Precision
Values close to each other
Define Reliability
Consistent values in repeats and independent replicates
Define Accuracy
(Averages of) data close to true value
Define Validity
Variables controlled so effect is due to independent variable.
What is a positive control?
A treatment that is included to check that the system can detect a positive result.
What is a negative control?
Provides results in the absence of the treatment.
What is a discrete variable?
can only take certain values from a finite set.
What is a continuous variable?
Can take any value.
