Unit 3: Ecology Flashcards
(15 cards)
Ecology
Scientific study of interactions between organisms and their environment
Niche
Role in ecosystem
Fundamental- all possible areas species can exist
Realized- where species actually is found
Seasons
June: North- summer, South- winter
December: North- winter, South- summer
3 Parts of Climate
Temperature
Upwelling
Rain Shadow
Upwelling (climate)
Parallel wind creates a vortex pulling cold, deep water to coast (along with nutrients), and warm surface water out to sea
Rain Shadow (climate)
Along coast, water evaporates and moves up mountain range, as it goes up it rains (lower pressure in clouds), cold dry air pulls water from other side of mountain, which becomes desert
Equator (biomes)
High temp, high precipitation
Tropical rainforest
30 (biomes)
High temp, low precipitation
Desert
Equator-30 (biomes)
High temp, medium precipitation (seasonal)
Temperate grasslands or savannah
60 (biomes)
Low temp, high precipitation
Arboreal/coniferous forests
30-60 (biomes)
Mild-med temp, mild-med precipitation (seasonal)
Temperate/broadleaf forests (if humid) or chaparral (if dry)
Poles (biomes)
Low temp, low precipitation
Tundra
Island Biogeogrphy
Immigration rate is affected by island difference
Extinction rate affected by island size
Disturbance
Low = Dominant species takeover, competitive exclusion
Med = Ideal, max species diversity, competitive
High = Too unstable, low survivorship
Ecological Succession
Primary- How life propagates in an area with no life
Secondary- Life recovers/regenerates after a disturbance
