How do the four last things affect how we act on earth?
Thinking about where we’re heading can make us want to follow God in a better, more fulfilling way
What is heaven?
seeing the Beatific Vision.
What is the Beatific Vision?
the idea that we are going to see the very core of what God is when we are in heaven. We can’t understand his essence on Earth yet because he doesn’t fit the universals
Why does the beatific vision make us happy and fulfill us?
because we were created for a relationship with God and this completes the relationship by making it as full and perfect as possible
What is holiness? What are the 2 things about it that we mentioned in class?
being united to and in love with God; we have sanctifying grace in our soul and we have a lot of good, virtuous habits that make us act in a way that Christ would act
What is the first stage of growing in holiness?
The purgative stage
What is the second stage of growing in holiness?
the illuminative stage
What is the third stage of growing in holiness?
The unitive stage
What happens to someone’s prayer as they continue to get holier?
the subjects praying becomes more passive and God begins to take over; less thinking and more of God doing
What is contemplation?
when God directly puts an experiential knowledge of truths into someone in a way that is beyond words
What does the “Universal Call to Holiness” mean?
God’s will for everyone to become holy and everyone should be trying to travel through the stages of holiness and grow in their relationship with god
Everyone is called to contemplation
What does it mean when the Church “canonizes” someone as a saint?
the person is in heaven and is being held up as an example of someone who led a good life
What type of honor do we give to the saints?
Veneration
What type of honor do we give to God?
Adoration
What is veneration?
Veneration honors someone that is created by God, asks the saints to pray through the power of God, and recognizes their holiness as gifts from God
What is adoration?
Adoration honors God and recognizes him as the supreme creator, he is holy in himself
What is the church in heaven united with?
The church on earth
