Unit 3: Introduction to Translation Flashcards
MCB 181R University of Arizona
What is the primary structure of a polypeptides chain?
The unique sequences of amino acids in the polypeptide chain.
What does the primary structure of a polypeptide determine?
How the polypeptide folds into its final 3D shape.
How is the information for making a protein stored?
In a sequence of nucleotides bases (Specifically in mRNA).
What is mRNA?
A linear chain of nucleotides.
- Contains 4 different unique bases.
What is the relationship between a gene and a polypeptides amino acid sequence?
A gene codes for a polypeptides amino acid sequence.
How many different unique R groups/side chains do amino acids have?
20.
What is genetic code?
A short sequence of mRNA nucleotides bases (a codon) stands for” an amino acid.
What is codon?
A short sequence of mRNA nucleotide bases that codes for amino acid.
What did George Gamow propose?
A three-base on the number of possible three- base codons.
Why is a three- base code important?
It provides 64 possible codons, enough to code for 20 amino acids.
In what direction are proteins synthesized?
From the N- terminus (NH2 end) to the terminus (COOOH end).
