UNIT 3 (Nervous System) Flashcards
(19 cards)
Name and briefly describe the 3 different types of neurons discussed in class
Sensory neurons: carry impulses from
receptors in the sense organs to the spinal cord and brain
Motor neurons: carry messages from the brain and spinal cord to effectors such as muscles or glands
Interneurons: carry impulses between the sensory and motor neurons
Explain what an action potential is
A reversal of charges is a nerve impulse. Impulse moves along the axon, allows the K+ ions to move out of the cell, restoring its potential.
What are the 4 requirements for a neural response
Stimulus – A trigger or signal.
Resting potential – The neuron’s stable, inactive state.
Threshold – The minimum level the stimulus must reach.
Action potential – The electrical signal sent by the neuron.
What’s the function of the central nervous system?
Receive, process, and respond to information. CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord.
What’s the function of the frontal lobe?
Control thinking, movement, and behavior.
What’s the function of the parietal lobe?
Process sensory information from the body.
What’s the function of the occipital lobe?
Process visual information.
What’s the function of the temporal lobe?
Process sound and help with memory.
What’s the function of the cerebellum?
Control balance, coordination, and movement.
What’s the function of the pond and medulla?
The pons helps with breathing, sleep, and communication in the brain.
The medulla keeps you alive by controlling automatic body functions.
What’s the function of the peripheral nervous system? What 2 subsystems is it further categorized into?
The PNS sends messages to and from the CNS and is split into the somatic (voluntary) and autonomic (involuntary) systems.
Describe the autonomic nervous system
Controls automatic body functions and balances stress responses with relaxation.
Describe the somatic nervous system
The somatic nervous system lets you move your body and feel the world around you.
What’s a reflect arc?
A reflex arc is a quick nerve loop that makes your body react fast without thinking
We discussed 5 nervous system disorders in class, name and describe 2 of them.
Parkinson’s Disease; affects movement, caused by the dopamine-producing cells in the brain, shaking.
Epilepsy: Causes seizures due to abnormal brain activity, and affects movement, feelings or consciousness
What’s a stimulant and what’s its effect on the body?
A drug/substance that increases activity in the nervous system.
A stimulant speeds up your body and brain activity.
What’s a depressant and what’s its effect on the body?
A drug/substance that slows down the activity of the nervous system.
A depressant calms and slows down your body and brain activity.
Which drugs are often considered gateway drugs?
Common gateway drugs are alcohol, tobacco (nicotine), marijuana (cannabis)
We discussed 6 mental disorders in class, name and describe 2 of them.
Depression: persistent sadness, and loss of interest
Anxiety Disorder: excessive worry, fear or nervousness and can lead to physical symptom
