Q

These issues are targeted by health promotion for a number of reasons, including:

A
  • They contribute significantly to the burden of disease in Australia.
  • They incur substantial economic costs through health care, absenteeism, loss of productivity and social security payments.
  • They are associated with considerable social impacts, such as avoidable deaths and inequalities between population groups.
  • They all have a modifiable component and, if addressed, significant improvements can be made

Q

why money is invested in health promotion

A
  • Governments have invested billions of dollars in health promotion in Australia over time because the cost of preventing ill health is significantly lower than the cost of treating diseases and injuries.
  • Given that not all diseases and injuries can be prevented, it is important to invest in both the biomedical model of health and health promotion.

Q

how the ottawa charter is invloved i health promotion

A

The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion is used to guide the development of health promotion interventions and, as a result, the action areas of the Ottawa Charter will be used to identify key aspects of each strategy.

The action areas are:
- Build healthy public policy
- Create supportive environments
- Strengthen community action
- Develop personal skills
- Reorient health services.

There are many factors that contribute to the health issues explored in this topic and, as a result, multiple action areas of the Ottawa Charter must be targeted to achieve the most significant improvements possible

Health promotion focus — Smoking and vaping: Quit campaigns

A

Quit Victoria aims to decrease the use of both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes by assisting individuals to quit and preventing the uptake of these behaviours.

BUILD HEALTH PUBLIC POLICY:
- Quit undertakes research and provides advice to the state government to develop healthy public policies.
- Examples of policies include laws relating to smoking and vaping in public places, advertising, the ban on disposable vapes and the display of cigarettes in retail outlets.
- Quit also provides advice to the federal government to inform the development of health policies such as tobacco packaging, tobacco taxes and e-cigarette restrictions.

CREATE SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENTS:
- providing support throughout the quitting process

STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY ACTION:
- by assisting health professionals, community groups and various population groups to create environments that support quitting. It does this by:
- providing specialist training for health professionals to implement proven ‘brief interventions’ and referrals to Quitline

DEVELOP PERSONAL SKILLS:
- provides information regarding tobacco smoking and vaping and the benefits associated with not smoking or vaping.
- This is achieved through public education using mass media advertising campaigns, public relations and downloadable information on the Quit website.

REORIENT HEALTH SERVICES:
- Quit provides a free online learning training program for health professionals that assists in reorienting health services. Quit Victoria’s Smoking Cessation Essentials course and Smoking Cessation Brief Intervention videos provide health professionals with knowledge and skills to:
- highlight the important role of health professionals and the effectiveness of smoking and vaping cessation interventions
- inform of the effects of smoking and vaping and the benefits to patients/clients in quitting
- provide an understanding of smoking and vaping behaviour
