Unit 3 Part 4 - 2.2.4 VSEPR Theory Flashcards
21APR25
What does VSEPR stand for?
Valence shell electron pair repulsion
What is the shape of a molecule determined by?
The repulsion between electron domains around a central atom
Which notion is the VSEPR Theory based on?
” That b/c electrons pairs in the same valence shell carry the same charge, they repel each other and so spread themselves as far apart as possible”
What determines the geometrical arrangement of the electron domains?
The total number of electrons domain around the central atom
What is the shape of the molecule determined by?
The angles between the bonded atoms
Why do non-bonding pairs (lone pairs) and multiple bonds cause a little more repulsion than a bonding pair?
- Non-bonding pairs have a high concentration of charge than bonding pairs b/c they are not shared between two atoms
- Multiple bonds have a higher concentration of charge b/c they contain two or three pairs of electrons
Why do non-bonding pairs have a high concentration of charge than bonding pairs?
b/c they are not shared between two atoms
Why do Multiple bonds have a higher concentration of charge?
b/c they contain two or three pairs of electrons
What is the order that the repulsive force will decrease in?
Non bonding pair > multiple bond> single
What does electron domain geometry determined by?
The positions of all the electron domains
What is the molecular geometry dependent on?
Only on the position of the bonded atom
