Unit 3 Part 8 - 2.2.10 --> Chromatography Flashcards
3MAY25
What is chromatography?
A technique used to separate components of a mixture
What are the two phases of chromatograohy?
Stationary and mobile phase
How does a mixture separate?
As the mobile phase moves through the stationary
What happens if the components of the mixture have similar IMF as the solvent?
There will be higher affinity for the mobile phase’
- ‘ like dissolves like’
What is chromatography mainly used for?
Quantitative analysis
What is the stationary phase?
The paper
- Has 10% water
What is the mobile phase?
The solvent
Why does the solvent rise up the paper?
B/c of capillary action
What happens as the mixture climbs up the stationary phase?
It dissolves the components in the mixture to differing extents, carrying them at different rates and instances on the paper
What is the final result called?
A chromatogram
Retardation factor formula?
Distance moved by the component/ Distance moved by solvent
