What had happened to the East coast fishing industry?

A

In 1992, the cod industry in the Grand Banks (NFLD) had collapsed (less than 1% of initial population left!). The Atlantic cod was declared an endangered species and the federal government put a temporary stop on cod fishing.

How did the cod fishing problem affect the Maritimes’ economy and local businesses?

A

It adversely affected their economies and local businesses. About 40 000 people lost their jobs and local businesses and communities had struggled to recover (from losses in profit).

How was the East coast fishing industry problem resolved?

A

The government imposed quotas on the amount of fish caught during the fishing season, denied access to any international fishing ships, and diversified the types of fish caught to be used in the fish market. They also introduced aquacultures (fish farming).
