Unit 4: Natural Resources and Industries Flashcards
(12 cards)
Primary Industry
Deals with the cultivation and harvesting of raw materials and natural resources. Examples: Farmers, Lumberjacks, Miners
Secondary Industry
Raw materials need to be manufactured into finished, usable goods. Examples: Manufacturing, Construction, Food Processing
Tertiary Industry
Provides services to businesses and consumers. Examples: Retail, transportation, healthcare, education, finance (banks)
Quaternary Industry
Involves intellectual activities, such as research, development, and information technology. Examples: Scientific research, Information technology (software development), Data analysis
Biotic
Resources that are derived from living organisms or organic (living or previously living materials)
- Examples: Forests and timber, Fish and other marine life, crops (wheat, corn, etc.)
Abiotic
Resources that are derived from the non-living, physical, and chemical components of the environment
- Examples: Water (rivers, lakes, oceans), Air (atmosphere), Sunlight
Metallic minerals
A mineral that yields a metal when refined (ex Gold)
- Uses: Jewellery
Industrial minerals
Industrial minerals are neither metallic nor fossil fuels but rather a varied combination of products extracted from the Earth.
- Some examples include Salt, Diamonds, Asbestos and Potash.
Fossil Fuels
A mineral that can be burned to produce energy.
- Some examples are natural gas, oil, and coal.
Mining
Mining happens around the world in places like Africa, China, the U.S., and South America. It’s important because it provides materials we need for phones, cars, buildings, and electricity. But mining causes problems like pollution, habitat destruction, child labour, and some resources are running out.
Fishing
Fishing happens in oceans, rivers, and lakes worldwide, especially in places like China, Indonesia, and the U.S. It’s important for food, jobs, and economies. However, overfishing, pollution, and habitat damage are big problems, and some fish populations are shrinking fast.
Oil
Oil is found in countries like Saudi Arabia, the U.S., Russia, and Canada. It’s important for fuel, plastics, and energy. But oil drilling can cause spills, pollution, and climate change. Plus, oil is running out because it’s a non-renewable resource.
