Unit 4.1 - Atoms and Elements Flashcards
(8 cards)
How are atoms seen?
Through STM - Scanning Tunnelling Microscope
What is a nucleus and what makes it up?
Nucleus is the centre of each atom. It is made up of protons and neutrons
Electron Configuration
Arrangement of electrons in electron shells (2,8,18,32)
Element
A substance composed of atoms with the same atomic number; 118 known to exist
Ground State
The lowest energy arrangement of an atom’s electrons in the electron shells
Indirect Evidence
Evidence that does not involve direct observation
What are Atoms ?
Atoms are the particles that make up all the substances in the universe
Isotopes
Isotopes are the atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons, they have the same proton number, but different mass number
