Unit 5.3 - Rates of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
(9 cards)
Catalysts
chemicals that help speed up reactions but are not consumed during reaction. They do two things:
reduces amount of energy require to convert reactants into products
makes it easier for reactant molecules to collide and form products
Surface Area
more particles reacting at the same time means faster reaction rate
smaller pieces : larger area
Concentration
amount of reactant present in a particular volume of liquid or gas during reaction
higher concentration : faster reaction bc more likely to collide and react
Collision Theory
Before particles can react they must collide
- reactant particles approach each other
- collision forms activated complex
- product particles move away
Temperature
higher temp : increase rate of reaction
Increase of temp increases the speed of the particle in liquids and gases.
Consequently, particles collide more frequently, so more chemical reactions occur in a shorter time span
Factors that affect Rate of Reaction
temperature concentration of reactants surface area agitation catalysts
Rate of Reaction
speed at which chemical reaction proceeds
Solubility
able to be dissolved in liquid
Agitation
stirring or mixing to create faster reaction
ensures reactants are being kept in contact by removing build up of products around reactants which slow reaction as it creates a barrier
