What was the treaty of Cordoba?

A

Who was Moses Austin?

A

Moses Austin was an American businessman and pioneer who played a large part in the development of the lead industry in the early United States. He was the father of Stephen F. Austin, one of the earliest American settlers of Texas, which was at the time part of Mexico. Austin’s primary intention was to create a trading venture on the coast of Texas to allow the United States to trade with New Spain. On December 23, 1820, Austin arrived in San Antonio to begin negotiations with the Spanish government to establish a trading post.

What was Stephen F. Austin’s Colony?

A

Austin’s Colony was the first and largest Anglo-American settlement in Mexican Texas and was established by Stephen F. Austin in 1821. It was authorized by the Mexican government and allowed for the introduction of 300 families into Texas. The economic panic of 1819 led his father, Moses Austin (1767–1821), to leave his lead-mining business in Missouri and embark upon a scheme of colonization in Texas. Moses obtained a grant of land from the Mexican government but died soon thereafter, and in 1821 Stephen went to Texas to carry out his father’s project

The constitution of 1824 set a number of democratic goals and provided for a federal republic, consisting of 19 states, four territories, and the Mexico City federal district. Stephen F. Austin conferred with the Mexican leaders who framed the Constitution of 1824, and Juan José María Erasmo Seguín represented Texas in the constituent assembly; the farmers of Austin’s colony contributed several hundred bushels of corn to help pay Seguín’s expenses. The 1824 constitution was the result of the war of independence against the Spanish empire and the collapse of the monarchy of Agustin I de Iturbide who established the First Mexican Empire. This constitution presided over the government of Guadalupe Victoria, who was the first president of Mexico

What is the State Colonization Law of 1825?

A

On August 18, 1824, the Mexican government passed a new national colonization law. This law allowed foreigners to settle on any vacant public land in Mexico, but restricted foreigners from settling within twenty leagues of the border with another country and within ten leagues of the coast. After the fall of Iturbide, Mexico adopted a federal system similar to that of the United States, and the federal Congress passed the national colonization law on August 18, 1824. It incentivized people to move to both Texas and a nearby state within Mexico.
