unit 5 Flashcards
What is angioplasty?
Technique to mechanically widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel.
What is the aorta?
Largest blood vessel in the body.
What is temporal arteritis?
A form of vasculitis that can cause headaches, visual impairment, & jaw pain.
What is atherectomy?
Surgical removal of plaque buildup from the interior of an artery.
What is atherosclerosis?
Hardening and narrowing of the arteries caused by buildup of cholesterol plaque on interior arterial walls.
What is bradycardia?
Abnormally slow resting heart rate.
What is cardiac catheterization?
Diagnostic procedure in which a small tube is inserted into a vein/artery and guided into the heart.
What is cardiomyopathy?
All diseases of the heart muscle.
What is endocarditis?
Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart.
What is blood dyscrasia?
Pathological condition of the cellular elements of the blood.
What is anemia?
Lower than normal number of erythrocytes in the blood.
What is septicemia?
Severe infections caused by bacteria in the blood.
What are erythrocytes?
Mature red blood cells produced by bone marrow.
What is hemoglobin?
Oxygen-carrying blood protein pigment of the erythrocytes.
What is hemolytic anemia?
Inadequate number of circulating red blood cells from premature destruction of red blood cells by the spleen.
What is hemostasis?
Stop or control bleeding.
What is leukemia?
Type of cancer with progressive increase in number of abnormal leukocytes in blood-forming tissue, organs, and circulating blood.
What are leukocytes?
Blood cells used in defending the body against infective organisms and foreign substances.
What is leukopenia?
Decrease in the number of disease-fighting white blood cells circulating in the blood.
What is phlebitis?
Inflammation of a vein.
What is tachycardia?
Abnormally rapid resting heart rate.
What is thrombocytopenia?
Abnormally small number of platelets circulating in the blood.
What is thrombosis?
Abnormal condition in which blood clots block veins/arteries.
What is a thrombus?
Blood clot attached to interior arterial wall.
