Ephesus letter
Known for: local capital, temple of Artemis. Had a sacred tree of protection
Message: “you didn’t love me like your did at first”
Promise: tree of life for those who repent and conquer
Letter for Smyrna
City: found by Alexander the Great, Amazing architecture, dangerous place for Christians because it was the centre for Caesar worship
Message: “ stay faithful. Don’t loose heart even when facing death”
Promise: not to fear the 2nd death. Receive the crown of life.
Letter from Pergamum
City: centre of pagan worship, 3 temples of emperor worship, used black stone marble white stone.
Message: “ I have a few reminders for you…don’t compromise”
Promise: receive a secret name showing your relationship with Jesus
Letter for Thyatira
City: wealthy city, known for their colourful dyes. They were tolerated by “Jezebel”
Message: “ hold tightly to what you have”
Promise: morning star
Letter for Sardis
City: built on a cliff. They thought that they were safe .
Message: “ you have a reputation for being alive but actually you’re dead.”
Promise: Jesus will not wipe out their names, He will acknowledge their names before God and His angels
Letter for Philadelphia
City: built on a plateau, known as the gateway to the east
Message: “ I have opened the door for you and no one can shut it because you have been faithful”
Promise: they will be made pillars in the temple of God
Letter for laodicea
City: prosperous city, medical centre, banking/exchanging, industry quality wool. Lack of water supply
Message: “ you are neither hot or cold! I wish you you were either hot or cold! Lukewarm water makes me puke!”
Promise: I’m here at the door. I want to eat with you. I want to share my throne with you!
